Category:

Cefuroxime Axetil Tablet is an antibiotic that falls under the category of medications known as cephalosporin, used to treat a variety of bacterial infections. It is effective for urinary tract infections (UTIs), mild to moderate lower respiratory infections (such as bronchitis), severe lower respiratory infections (including pneumonia), pyelonephritis (inflammation of the kidneys caused by bacterial infection), uncomplicated gonorrhea (a sexually transmitted infection), and Lyme disease (resulting from bites by infected black-legged ticks) in both adults and children over the age of 12.

How Do Cefuroxime Axetil Tablets Work?

As a broad-spectrum antibiotic, Cefuroxime Axetil Tablet is bactericidal, meaning it kills a wide range of bacteria. It destroys bacterial cells by attaching to their outer layer and inhibiting the enzyme responsible for producing peptidoglycan, which is essential for building the bacterial cell wall. Consequently, the bacteria are not able to grow and reproduce, leading to their death.

Directions For Use and Its Side Effects

Cefuroxime Axetil Tablets should be taken only if prescribed by a healthcare professional. It is available in different formulations, including dispersible tablets, oral tablets, and oral suspension. Most bacterial infections typically resolve within a week, although some conditions may require a longer duration for treatment. Therefore, it is important to finish the full course of medication as directed by your doctor for the specific infection.

During treatment with Cefuroxime, you may experience some mild and temporary side effects, such as headaches, dizziness, stomach upset, overgrowth of candida (a fungal skin infection), an unpleasant taste in your mouth, diaper rashes, and eosinophilia (an increase in white blood cells that fight disease). These side effects usually occur in the early stages and resolve over time; however, if they persist, you should inform your doctor.

Precautions To Be Taken

  • Taking an overdose of Cefuroxime Axetil Tablets may lead to neurological issues, including cerebral irritation and seizures.
  • Although there is no clinical evidence of adverse effects of Cefuroxime Axetil Tablet on pregnant women or their babies, caution is advised when using this medication.
  • Cefuroxime is present in breast milk, so nursing mothers should use it with care.
  • This antibiotic can cause dizziness, and therefore, patients should be cautious when driving or operating heavy machinery.
